Representing AOU were Emmanuel Fred, Chair of the Board; V. Marshall Sambolla, Second Vice President; and Liwei Zheng, Executive Vice President.

Their participation reflects AOU's continuing engagement in the activities of the Greening Education Partnership following the University's formal admission to the Partnership.

The Greening Education Partnership is an inclusive global platform bringing together governments and other stakeholders to strengthen education's contribution to climate action and sustainable development. According to the meeting materials, as of July 2026, the Partnership included 99 countries and more than 2,000 participating organizations.

The Third Quarterly Working Group Meeting provided an opportunity for GEP members and partners to review progress, exchange experiences and discuss future priorities across the Partnership's main areas of work.

The programme covered the four principal GEP action areas — Greening Schools, Greening Curriculum, Greening Teacher Training and Education Systems' Capacities, and Greening Communities — together with discussions on Greening Higher Education.

The higher education session addressed issues including curriculum reform for sustainable development, research and innovation related to sustainability and climate change, and the role of young people in the future of higher education.

For AOU, participation in the meeting represents an important step from joining the Partnership to actively engaging in its collaborative work.

As an African-led open education and capacity-building organization, AOU is particularly interested in the connections between education, youth development, climate resilience, sustainable development and institutional capacity across Africa.

AOU will continue to participate in relevant GEP activities and explore opportunities to contribute African perspectives, experiences and networks to international cooperation on greening education and sustainable development.
