About Africa Open University (AOU)
Africa Open University (AOU) is a pan-African platform dedicated to open learning, youth skills, professional development, leadership capacity, innovation, technology cooperation and institutional partnerships across Africa.
Africa Open University was jointly initiated by the Liberia Academy of Sciences (LAS) and the International Academic Organizations Alliance (IAOA) as an Africa-led platform connecting African educational and development needs with international knowledge, expertise, technology and capacity-building resources.
AOU operates through a three-party framework: Liberia Academy of Sciences (LAS) — providing academic guidance and scientific oversight; International Academic Organizations Alliance (IAOA) — supporting operations and funding; Africa Open University (AOU) — the brand entity.

AOU is an Africa-led platform connecting practical education, open learning resources, professional expertise and development-oriented cooperation for African youth, professionals, institutions and communities across Africa.
Its registered purposes cover academic training, scientific research, innovation, vocational and technical education, international academic cooperation, and knowledge exchange. AOU's work is aligned with the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Built through African leadership and international cooperation
AOU was developed through cooperation between African and international partners committed to open learning, science education, youth development, professional training and institutional capacity building.
The Liberia Academy of Sciences (LAS), the International Academic Organizations Alliance (IAOA), and other international cooperation partners support AOU's development in areas such as educational cooperation, expert engagement, open learning resources, training programs, international academic exchange and development-oriented partnerships.
AOU is also developing strategic cooperation with Educational Services Exchange with China (ESEC) to support international resource mobilization, leadership training and cooperation among Africa, China and the United States.AOU is developing strategic cooperation with Educational Services Exchange with China (ESEC), a U.S.-based nonprofit education organization, to bring international educational resources, online learning expertise, and cross-border institutional cooperation to AOU's programs. This trilateral cooperation framework — connecting African institutions, Chinese development experience, and U.S. educational resources — enables AOU to offer programs that combine African relevance with international expertise. ESEC has agreed to participate in the development and governance of AOU; related appointments and governance procedures are being completed.

International Cooperation Center
The AOU International Cooperation Center (ICC) supports international partnerships, expert engagement, and cooperation programs with institutions across Africa, China, the United States and other regions, contributing to South-South cooperation and development partnerships.
Open Learning and Skills Development
AOU supports practical learning pathways, open learning resources, and skills training for youth, professionals, and institutions across Africa.
Focus areas include digital literacy, entrepreneurship, vocational skills, and modular learning programs designed for accessibility and real-world application.
Technology Cooperation and Transfer
AOU promotes applied technology dialogue, innovation cooperation, renewable energy training, agricultural and rural development solutions, digital learning support and technology-oriented capacity development relevant to Africa. AOU explores how technology transfer from international partners can support African innovation ecosystems and local technology adaptation.
Research, Policy and Knowledge Dialogue
AOU supports research notes, policy dialogue, expert discussions and knowledge exchange in areas related to open education, youth development, science and technology, governance, public policy, innovation and sustainable development. AOU also shares policy observations and knowledge resources aligned with Africa's development priorities.
